Why Your Mornings Fall Apart Without the School Routine (And How to Stop It)

Here’s something that normally takes LOTS of people by surprise when school holidays start: It is the wobble of your routine and why things that you thought would be easier now feel harder!
The school run is, when you think about it, a remarkable piece of infrastructure. It doesn’t just get children to school. It structures your entire morning. It tells your body when to get up, when to eat, when to switch into work mode. It creates what psychologists call “temporal scaffolding” a framework your nervous system quietly orients itself around, day after day, term after term. And then, one day in July, it just stops.
What actually happens in week one
You probably won’t notice it immediately. The first few days feel like a relief. Nobody has to be anywhere. There’s no PE kit to find, no reading record to sign, no 8:42am sprint to the gate.
But by day three or four, something subtle shifts. The mornings feel formless. You lose track of the time. Tasks that used to happen automatically (breakfast, getting dressed, starting work) suddenly require a decision. And decisions, even small ones, cost energy you don’t have spare.
It’s just what happens when the scaffolding disappears. And this is without even mentioning the increased number of people at home, the lack of quiet and headspace and also the constant need for entertaining and snacks! DEEP BREATHS!!!
Why it catches even organised people off guard
So why does this happen? The school routine is doing more heavy lifting than you realised. You weren’t maintaining your mornings through sheer willpower and good habits. You were borrowing structure from an external system, the same one your kids were borrowing from.
When that system goes on holiday, everyone feels it. The kids get fractious because their anchors have shifted. You get fuzzy because yours have too. The house gets messier because the rhythm that kept it moving has paused.
It’s not chaos. It’s just a gap where the routine used to be.
The heads-up you actually need
You don’t need to replicate the school term in July. That way lies misery for everyone.
But it does help to know, going in, that the wobble is coming and that it tends to peak around day four or five, then settle once a looser summer rhythm starts to form on its own.
What makes the difference isn’t having a perfect plan. It’s having a few anchor points that your day can hang off. A rough shape to the morning. A sense of when things happen, even if it’s approximate.
Not a schedule. A scaffold.
What this fortnight is about
Here at TOM we’re looking at the practical side of keeping your home (and your head) running through the summer without making yourself miserable in the process.
Not perfection. Not a military operation. Just a few things that tend to help and some honest acknowledgement that it’s genuinely harder than it looks, and you’re not doing it wrong.
The routine is going to wobble. That’s fine. Let’s make sure it doesn’t take you with it.
